Mosquito repellant is a must when you go on holidays! You might never have experienced a major mosquito pest in your home town, but wait till you go camping or spending your holiday near a lake. It is very advisable to bring a mosquito repellant when you go to a place that you don’t know so well and that might have a lot of fresh water, rainfall or moderate to high temperatures. Mosquitos are born in the water so in general, the more water, the more mosquitos.
Most mosquito repellants contain deet, a powerful pesticide that has been linked to a number of health problems such as dizziness, skin rashes and even seizures. There are totally natural mosquito repellants as well, though. There exists a large variety of mosquitos that all react differently to repellant. You will find that some repellants work to scare one sort of mosquitos away, while other mosquitoes happily stay around to take another sip of your blood.
You can do more than using a mosquito repellant to keep the little bastards away. Dark clothes, for example, attract mosquitoes so avoid wearing those in a mosquito-rich surroundings. Carbon dioxide scares mosquitoes away. You produce carbon dioxide while and after exercising. A fire also produces it. Mosquitoes are attracted by perspiration, because of the chemicals it contains and also because it increases the humidity around your body. Try to keep dry!
Natural mosquito repellants will work to repel mosquitos, you just need to apply it more often than a chemical repellant containing deet. Examples of natural ingredients in mosquito repellants are: Citronella Oil, Lemon Eucalyptus Oil, Cinnamon Oil, Castor Oil, Rosemary Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Cedar Oil, Peppermint Oil, Clove Oil and Geranium Oil.
